I cannot get LPT4 to work on an ISA card?

Only PCI cards can access LPT ports greater than LPT3.

My printer does not work properly on a PCI card?

Most late model printers have IEEE1284 ports which work perfectly on PCI cards. Some early model printers have standard parallel (Centronics) ports which can cause some printer errors when used on PCI cards. For example: no printing at all, 'printer not ready' errors, illegal form feeds etc.
If you have a printer with these symptoms, connect it either to the motherboard parallel port or to an ISA parallel port, or replace the printer with a later model.

My software wants DOS addresses?

Our current PCI RS232 (9835) and parallel (9805 & 9715) cards can be set to legacy addresses. Simply change the address in the 'MULTIFUNCTION CARD' entry in the Device Manager to the legacy address you want and restart the computer. The correct legacy address will be shown on the COM/LPT entry in Device Manager.

I have installed a PCI card but it shows the wrong device in Device Manager?

This is very common with RS232 cards--when you install an RS232 card, WINDOWS sees it as COM5 instead of COM3. Go to Device Manager and change the address in 'MULTIFUNCTION CARD' to the correct address (for example COM3 is 03E8-03FF). Restart the computer - Windows should reinstall it correctly.

I have used ADD NEW HARDWARE to add a PCI device?

All PCI cards are Plug and Play you cannot use this Control Panel option for PCI cards. Go to Device Manager and remove any items you have installed with this option, turn the PC off, physically remove the PCI card(s) you installed and restart the system. Make sure the Device Manager has a completely clean installation. Turn off the computer, install the PCI card and restart the computer. If Windows does not find the card on startup and ask you for a driver, there is a problem with your system BIOS. Make sure you are using the latest BIOS from the motherboard manufacturer - there are quite a few computers that do not have a 100% PnP BIOS.

I installed a PCI RS232 card and a PCI parallel card and I am having problems?

This is a common problem and is easily fixed - only install ONE PCI card at a time - make sure you have a completely clean Device Manager before installing the second (or third) card.

I have installed a PCI card and drivers but Device Manager does not show the ports?

This problem is usually because you have not installed the correct drivers. Look at the back of the PCI card for the model identification sticker (for example the PCI single parallel card is model 9805) and install the drivers for that model.

I am using an IEEE1394 card but having a few problems

First check you are using WIN98SE or later--otherwise it will never work ! Using these cards with video cameras, VCR's and video software can be complex.

Please note: that this FAQ sheet does not cover every possible hardware combination and if you are having other problems you should consult your DV hardware supplier. CPU, hard drive performance and RAM capacity all affect IEEE1394 performance.

I have just bought a USB accessory for my computer and it uses USB V2.0. Why should I add a USB V2.0 port to my computer ? Until recently, the only USB ports that were available were USB V1.1. These ports have a maximum data transfer rate of 12 Mbps. USB V2.0 can transfer data up to 480 Mbps (that's 40 times faster!). All USB V2.0 devices are backward compatible with USB V1.1
